Indicators of "Hip"
Civil Disobedience Resilient Liberation of oneself |
All of these indicators extend the idea of American character
The reason Civil disobedience extends the idea of american character is because to be civilly disobedient you have to go against society and what everybody thinks. You have to fight for what you think is right. For example in Huck Finn huck says he will go to hell for Jim a runaway slave. This shows that Huck does not agree with how society treats slaves and that he will go against society to prove it.

Resilience creates another aspect of american character. Resilience is never quitting and getting back up after getting knocked down. Mcmurphy in one flew over the Cuckoos nest shows resilience very well. He shows it whenever nurse Ratched tries to demolish his ideas. Whenever she ruins one of his ideas he gets back up and thinks of an even crazier idea. This type of behavior can be seen as bad in the eyes of society. This is because it is an act of trying to become free from civilization and become your own person.

The act of liberating yourself can be seen as rebelling against something which extends the idea of American Character. In death of a salesmen Biff is seen as a bum because he is working on a farm out west. Throughout the book Biff tells his family that he does it because he loves it, this can be seen as liberating yourself. By working out on the farm out west Biff is seen as rebelling against his father but in reality he is just trying to make his father proud by doing something he loves.
