A Raisin in the Sun (Essay1)
Excerpt: In the poem “Harlem” the line “or fester like a sore” develops the idea of untreatable pain. This is shown through mama throughout the first act when talks about leaving their one room apartment.
Explanation: This excerpt from my essay on a raisin in the sun complicates the idea of American ideas. This is because it shows struggle through Mama. Mama complicates the idea because she has worked her whole life towards the goal of getting out of a one bedroom apartment. This creates another layer to american ideals it shows that you can work all your life and still not have the idealistic life you want to live.
Excerpt:The idea of festering like a sore is also shown through Walter lee like in act 1 when he makes the mistake of lying to his business partners about money that he doesn't have.
Explanation: Walter Lee lying to his business partners shows that american ideals are flawed which complicates the idea. In an idealistic America Walter Lee wouldn't have even been in that situation, but he was. This is because at this period of time American ideals were based on white culture. In” A Raisin in the Sun” Walter Lee states that money is everything which Mama replies by saying it used to be freedom. This shows that even though the black society at the time was advancing that it was still behind white society.
